All captive bred reptiles have to come from the wild at some point, and if the founding wild caught stock is too small, the captive bred animals will get inbred, which can be bad. I don't think that novices should be running out to the petstore and buying half dead wild caught ball pythons, but that's a matter of personal responsibility on their part.
For the record I own 32 captive bred snakes and one wild caught viper.
