I'm in Canada. I believe our humane society is run mostly the same
as yours.
:Running a reptile rescue, we get this frequently from the surrounding area. For the better part of two months now we have been notifying shelters and individuals that, at least for the time being, we are full and cannot take in any new animals. Regardless of this, the surrounding shelters still insist on sending individuals to us to surrender snakes and lizards - most commonly iguanas. The only things that we can tell these people is to go BACK to the shelter and explain to them that we are full, that they are an *ANIMAL* shelter not just a dog/cat/cute&fuzzy shelter and that it is their responsibility to care for that particular animal to the best of their ability. We are always more than willing to consult and assist an organization in constructing a suitable enclosure for anything that they are not familiar with - information is ALWAYS available from us.
:The only other option that we can really offer is to place a call to local media - newspaper, TV, etc and explain to them the situation. Like it or not, there ARE situations when a small amount of "hardball" has to be played in order to assinst in the care of an animal. True, many shelters are overcrowded/understaffed but there is the "rare" case when a shelter is literally sitting on six or even seven figures in donations, trusts, investments, and/or endowments and are simply unwilling to part with the funds. And, no, I'm not counting the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in that statement because I'm still not 100% sure if they operate a single shelter facility despite being worth literally over 100 million dollars.
:You did the best that you could do in this particular situation. If you have ANY information from the girl, i.e. address, name, etc. maybe pass it along to local animal control and see if they can track the cat down. Where are you located in the world?
