:Assuming that we are speaking of the United States, this country can't/won't help the animals that are already housed in shelters in every state yet someone is adopting a "Sally Struthers" mentality and wants to bring animals in from OTHER countries ?!?!?!?! How many animal cruelty charges are being brought against the couple stopped that were stopped while attempting to bring 500+ dogs to Arizona - the case where investigators evidently had to wear gas masks when inside the transport because the stench of feces-generated ammonia was so strong ? Or the woman that lived in her car with 34 dogs because she could't stand the stench in her own home because she was keeping hundreds of dogs in the house? How many cruelty charges were levied against the chicken companies in the south that starved literally one MILLION chickens to death when they could no longer afford to feed them and filed Chapter 11(ZERO) ? I know that, in the exotic cruelty case that I was involved with, we removed literally over 100 live animals from a pet shop and the owner received a grand total of 6 misdemeanor cruelty charges and a whopping $3000 fine. I just hope that these people are calling each and every shelter in this country looking for adoptable animals before even thinking of looking to other countries.
:I'm absolutely disgusted to think that a shelter would consider themselves in "competition with pet shops for business". That statement implies that shelters are in the humane business in order to make a PROFIT as opposed to alleviating the various companion animal issues that exist. You don't form an animal shelter or humane society in order to make a profit. Well, at least not societies that actually take in animals and adopt them out. But what should one expect when animal "protection/welfare" societies/groups that, by their own admission do not operate even a single shelter, are allowed to funnel literally hundreds of millions of dollars in donations every year away from actual functioning "legitimate" shelters and Humane Societies because not only did they cleverly choose a name for themselves but give the impression that or are mistaken for a "flagship" for local humane societies and shelters and then turns around and pay their top "executives" six figure incomes for performing who knows what form of "admirable" tasks throughout the year. I wonder how many legitimate Humane Societies in the US that adopt animals out can afford to pay ANY employees six figure incomes ? Of course, I also wonder just how far 50-100 million dollars per year would go if distributed evenly throughout all of the actual shelters in the US...Ooops, sorry, that's a different tangent.....
:Import animals from other countries for adoption? Sure, when all of the animals looking for homes in the US have found them. If this practice is allowed to continue before then the individuals/group doing it are no better than the importers/pet shops etc. that have always done business that way and are openly in it for profit. "Competing" with pet shops/importers implies that humane is on the same plane of existance as running commercial for profit pet shops. If such is the case then these people, much like pet shops, are simply further contributing to the pet overpopulation that already exists in the US as opposed to trying to alleviate the problem. I, for one, have absolutely no respect for them. But that's me.....

i agree with you mr. d.....the fact also is that no one is TRYING to stop people from breeding purebred dogs also irritates me.....why dont we try and find HOMES for the dogs in the animal shelters....considering we have so many animal shelters....and considering the fact that a majority of them are kill shelters....dosnt help....either that or get more foster homes.....not alot of people seem to wish to foster dogs though....they either already have enough dogs that they currently own or wish to not even get involved at all.....considering teh fact that most of the breeders produce puppys and most people like the fact of getting a purebred rather than a *shelter animal*.....personally BOTH my dogs are shelter dogs.....i currently own a amstaff/shep mix and a dalmation mix.....i also volunteer at an animal shelter and have seen many a dog there that IS a purebred....why not ask breeders of the more popular dog breeds like labs/sheps/etc to just stop breeding them or not breed them as often and help get some of these shelter animals homes....or as a person who i talk to has done....he got a dog from a friend the dog ran away he didnt bother looking for it and got another dog....reason being the new dog which was a sib. husky didnt get along with his rottie...so instead of looking for it he didnt bother and just let it be....i mean....people need to figure out that dogs in pet stores arent healthy and that they have more options than just going to any dog breeder and getting a dog.....my aunt has owned 4 dogs so far....one im guessing was a finnish spitz and the other was my other aunts golden retriever....she got rid of them both because the finnish spitz wasnt housebroken and the goldie was *too big* she now has a purebred lab which she bought from a breeder when she could have adopted one from any animal shelter as labs are quite popular and she adopted a goldie mix PUPPY....both dogs are overweight....she refuses to put them on a diet....another fact is that people get a dog because its *cute* and dont bother to research its needs...or another thing is that people just like the idea of a dog and get rid of it if it gets to big and /or dosnt suit there needs....sorry for just rambling on....
