THIS IS AN OUTRIGHT FALLACY. Sure some come from the mass producing puppy mills, but an increasing number of pet shop puppies are coming from good breeders. One new way to tell is if the pup is AKC. Most mills now will not register AKC because of the DNA requirements and the costs associated with it. They'll use the cheaper registries that do not follow strict breeding guidelines.
What the pet industry does these days is hire a broker to search out pups available for sale. These brokers hire little old ladies to do the dirty work for them. They send the old ladies out to the show breeders with a sad look on their face and an equally sad story about how their little "muffin" died from old age at 18 years of age. They are just heartbroken and would like to get a new pet since they are so lonely since their husband passed away a few years ago. Its a scam meant to pull out all the strings as far as the sympathy card goes. They usually get their pup at the smallest cost possible. They then add $100 to the cost of the pup for their trouble and then sell the pup to the broker to resell to the pet shop. If the original breeder price was $400, the old lady upped it $100 to $500 and the broker adds his $100-$200 fee and sells it to the shop for $600-$700 which is converted to the $1,200 to $1,400 price that the shop sells at. This high price is only for the high end selling breeds such as yorkies. The old lady will either search out the cheapest pups she can find or try to buy it saying she can't afford $400 because she is on a fixed income. They will try to get pups in the $250-$300 range which converts to $800 selling price in the pet shop.
The old story about puppy mills supplying the pups to pet shops is outdated.

::hello
::for my animal care class were gathering a listing of petshops that sell puppies, of those that do were trying to figure out how many are of puppy mills.
::so if any one has any information on the pet shops in Minnesota (and even the surrounding area) it would help the class a whole lot.
::thanx

:Hi Ashley,
:In my opinion, ALL pet shops sell puppies from puppy mills. A responsible breeder wouldn't sell their puppies to a pet shop. Anyone wanting to get a puppy should go to the local rescue or to a responsible breeder where genetic defects and other potential problems are weened out of the bloodline. I have a puppy that i bought here in south Florida for $500.00. He was born in Missouri...Why would someone in Missouri ship tiny little puppies all the way to Florida to be sold? Had i known this i would never have bought from a pet store. I hope you spread the word that no one (especially around the holidays) should buy a puppy for a gift from a pet shop, or for themselves from a pet shop..This is the reason puppy mills are still in business. If people would just get the word out that puppies that are sold in pet shops come from puppy mills, they would be out of business, and a lot of puppies would be spared.
