Hello. Welp I work in Animal Control and deal very closely with an Animal Shelter. I work in Va and the shelter I work with picks up the most animals in the state. We cover 3 cities and a county. And we also have the highest adoption rate. We adopt out between 75% and 80% of our adoptable animals. By law we arn't allowed to adopt out Sick, Injuried, or Viscious animals. But we do return them to their owner if they have one and we can find them. And at the time of pick up of a injuried or sick animal we take them to a vet and get them checked out and depending on their injuries or sickness we may take them back to the shelter. But some times they are better off being put down. Also we are in contact with many rescue organizations that want certain kinds of full breeds. We also adopt out besides Cats and dogs, we have small rodents, Rats, hamsters, mice, gerbels, rabbits, guine pigs (Spelling), some times small birds like cokatels (Spelling), and a couple other things. We also some times when it's possible catch and neuter or spayed and then release. And in all my experience with animals I've never heard of a true no kill shelter. Some places say they are no kill shelters but they arn't. It's just like one of you said above they take them to a vet or some where else to put the animal down. But any ways I just wanted to put my two cents in. Thanks.
