I guess the important thing is to work towards the concept of "no kill," even if it is not a reality. If a shelter euthanizes animals that are terminally ill and in great discomfort, I wouldn't fault them for that. The problem comes with shelters like ours in North Carolina. As I said before, they have a 45% adoption rate among their "adoptable" pool. That means that 55% of the healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized. I have no experience or knowledge of other places because I have only recently become aware of this issue (having just rescued a kitty). But if this rate is considered good for the state of North Carolina, we are a long way from the ideal.
