October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

You must live in a wonderful state if your shelters only euthanize when given a court order or because an animal is very ill. Our local animal shelter has a 45% adoption rate. That means that 45% of the healthy, adoptable animals find homes. The rest are euthanized. They say they have one of the highest adoption rates in the state (North Carolina). Their policy is to euthanize all feral (i.e. wild, unadoptable) cats, so those cats don't even make it into the statistics. Unfortunately, I think this is common in the U.S. I have read that around 5 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year in this country. On the bright side, this is a drop from around 17 million 10-15 years ago, due in large part to the growth of the "no kill" movement. However I agree with you that some "no kill" organizations are not exactly what they seem to be. My experience calling "no kill" groups this spring was that they were full, so some of them told me to bring my stray kitties to the shelter, even though they know the shelter euthanizes healthy animals! Most of them tried to get me to foster the cats myself, which I eventually did. But not everyone can do this.

I think a combination of no-kill, trap-neuter-release and MASSIVE public awareness/low-cost spay neuter is the only way to solve this problem. I have been told that Canada has "federal" refuges for their stray animals.
