"Nature and a community can coexist when we care enough to do something about it," said the mayor of Homewood, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. One caring citizen who went to the city council talked them into establishing a salamander crossing across a busy highway in Homewood. He noticed that salamanders crossed the road during their migration in January and February.
Now 36-inch wide fluorescent green signs frame a 39-inch wide crossing that warns motorists to slow down, stop, and watch while the salamanders cross the road.
What a great action in these days of habitat destruction!
