Just my 1/2 cent: There is a company called Jet-a-Pet (www.jet-a-pet.com) whose only business is to transport pets safely. I don't know about the costs, as I haven't transported a pet myself, but it is an alternative, I think.
Regular airlines are very screwed up anyway. The other day they gave me a cold sandwich for lunch! Don't want to know how they treat the poor animals!
