So very sad to hear such bad news but I do think you have done the right thing. Sounds like you did everything you could and he went downhill very fast. I suppose you could have tried him in a cart but if he was in pain (which sounds like he was) and with little co-ordination I don't know if even that would've helped, especially on those kinds of places he was used to going, he would've got bogged down all the time. Such a shame but rest assured he will not be in pain any more and be able to run free again.

My sympathies and hugs. Let us know how you do.
