You do realize the risk involved in what you did, right? If you had taken the bat to a wildlife shelter, the bat would have to have been immediately killed, the head removed and sent of for lab testing. Federal regulations stipulate that if a bat is handled at any time by a member of the public without gloves (even touching the fur of its back), the animal must be promptly killed and sent off for rabies testing as they are HIGH risk. I have seen it time and time again and will probably continue to do so. Still, I admit you did a good job in releasing the bat, just remember to do so next time in a more efficient and less risky fashion.
