:When he was about nine inches head to hind end and getting around good,I returned him to the woods.I've been putting food out about twice a week and the last feeding is always gone.Should I continue to put out food or will he become too dependent on it?He has been on his own about three weeks.
Some opossums tend to stick around in the same area and not all wander away so he may decide to permenantly hang around your place and keep to a smaller territory what with his missing leg and all.
It would be best to keep putting food out for him. Winter is a hard time on opossums, especially if he's now partially handicaped. He won't become totally dependent on your handouts, but it will supplement his ability to find food and help fill in those times if he couldn't get enough on his own. At the very least he should have a small dish (about 1 cup worth) of a good quality adult dry dog food and if you want you can mix in some dry kitten food for additional protein since he is still a growing juvenile...(a 3part to 1part mix). Put the food out for him in the evenings since they are nocturnal. The occasional table scraps on the side is also fine to put out. Opossums are definitely fond of applesauce as a treat..mine loved all flavors except cinnamon. About the only food mine ever turned their nose up at were lima beans and cooked carrots :).
