I would suggest loading into your system mIRC. Im sure you will need assistance setting this program up, but it is a very small program space wise and has tons of other options that arent available in Java. Also the chances of successful connections as well as staying connected are far better.It is actually a very easy program to use once you learn it. You can email any of the phers on here for assistance. The program is shareware so you can pay if you want to.
