:Would you consider a dog that growls at a vet during an exam aggressive? My vet said, he wouldn't be "overly concerned," but recommended obedience training. Can this really help? I've always thought once aggressive, always aggressive. My dog also seems to be afraid of some men. (The vet is male.)I have a 2 year old child,so the issue of aggression is major concern.
Hi...I work for a vet as a tech....and yes I'm often growled at when we are working on a pet. Is it right? No but we also must consider that the pet may be very afraid during this time. There are many new smells and things going on around them that makes them confused. I agree with your vet that some training needs to come in here...at the same time when you are at school they can assess your dog and help you find the proper training that will work with you and your dog. What kind of dog is this? and has your dog ever growled at your child? The only thing I can suggest for you is talk to a behavorialist or trainer and the second thing is don't ever leave your child alone with your dog especially at this age with the child. Children don't always at this age know what and what isn't appropriate actions to place on a dog and often times a child will get nipped at. I remember a time when my son was about a year and half old and I have a pom. He got his fingers stuck in the dogs hair and naturally pulled the dogs hair. He got nipped....I immediately explained that this dog can't handle that and it hurts very very much. He understands know. Please set some boundries..which I know you are trying to do. And seek the advice of a trainer who will be able to help you.
Hugs and Goodluck
