Oasis

I've recently decided to put down my companion, Oasis. Oasis is a 6 year old dalmation who's been with me since puppyhood, when I got him at the Humane Society. He's been battling health problems all his life... he is deaf, has horrid allergies, and recently began losing his sight as well. Those reasons, plus a raging infection of some mysterious type that isn't responding to ANY kind of treatment, are not the reasons why I'm putting him down. I found out a month ago that Oasis' most recent bout with poor health is due to rapidly failing kidneys. Since then, his health has declined horribly. His hair is falling out, he's not eating much, and all his other problems are seeming more pronounced. Worst, he is crying from pain often now. Today, he's scheduled to be put to sleep in our home by a very nice woman. Regardless of how much he needs to go, I'm sitting in front of my computer right now at 5am, wondering if I've made the right choice. He's sleeping right next to me on his blanket, chasing a rabbit in his sleep.
While advice is probably not going to come in time, I think I'm just looking for a little bit of understanding. I've had a horrible battle over his impending euthanasia with my fiance, who absolutely refuses to believe that any animal ever needs to be put to sleep. I know that I'm going to feel guilty for a long time to come, and I'm hoping some of you can offer some encouragement, or things to tell myself when I'm feeling horrible for having my Oasis put to sleep.
