These type of stories make me sick. Only the most unethical of breeders will sell to a pet store. Most of the time these breeders turn over the pups to the pet broker at 4-5 weeks of age. The pups have not received their shots, they are barely weaned and definitely not socialized. As a breeder, I don't let our pups go until they are 10-12 weeks of age, they have been vet checked, dewclawed and have received their first shots. I carefully scrutinize the potential owner to make sure the pup will go to a loving, responsible home - and insist on a spay or neuter agreement. No, we don't make money - but we sleep at night knowing our little ones are well taken care of.
Our pups are born and raised in our home, and they are not registered, so I guess that makes us a "backyard breeder" but please, please remember we are not all bad. Unfortunately one only hears about the bad breeders and never about the rest of us.
