This may sound really weird, but... my cat, who we also adopted (she was a feral cat who was hungry, we started leaving food out for her on the porch, and then she decided she wanted to be indoors with us!) loves music. Not hard rock, but she really likes soft classical music, Irish music, etc. her favorite is Enya. So, maybe you could try playing some really soothing, sweet music, not too loud, for the little fellow? also, cats love to chase things, maybe try coaxing him out by interesting him in a piece of string that you twitch in front of him, then keep out of reach, etc. also, I don't know if there are any treats that he might find particularly tempting that might also bring him out of hiding.
