:Anna unfortunatly this may be the reason she was given away. I see frequently at shelters. Try a differant litter, she may not care for the kind you are using. Cats are funny about things like that, mine will only use the clumping kind because it's soft on there feet. You may want to also try posting your question on CatHobbyist under the behavior board. They are wonderful there and will provide you lots of support as most of them have cats like this.

Thanks so much! I got on the cat chat the other night and they said to try various things- what I decided on was to get 2 litter boxes. Someone suggested that and that is what the vet said also. So we will see! Wish me luck!
