:::Our new cat, Abby, was a stray. She was using the litter box for about a week, now she is going right next to it on the rug. What do I do?
::
::First I would take her to the vet to rule out any infections going on inside, second have you changed the litter? Or cleaning it out everyday. Some cat's don't like dirty litter boxes.

:I am taking her to the vet tomorrow for her shots and am taking a stool sample w/me. The liter is clean, I scoop it out. It is kind of the "chunky" kind, do some cats prefer something softer? I am sorry about all the questions, but I have reptiles, this is my first, "furry" critter.
: I hate to even think this, but could this be the reason someone got rid of her? I won't of course, I will do whatever to fix this problem. Today I found a "deposit" in the corner of my dining room. Thanks!

Anna unfortunatly this may be the reason she was given away. I see frequently at shelters. Try a differant litter, she may not care for the kind you are using. Cats are funny about things like that, mine will only use the clumping kind because it's soft on there feet. You may want to also try posting your question on CatHobbyist under the behavior board. They are wonderful there and will provide you lots of support as most of them have cats like this.
