Doggie odour

We have recently aquired a dachshund as a pet. Eight months old, healthy and full of beans. What we didn't count on was such a strong body odour.
He has a beautiful shiney coat, so I don't really want to start bathing him, or do anything that might result in drying out of the coat. Currently I'm using a pet wipe that has aloe vera on it - but the effect lasts about 5 minutes!
Can anyone advise us on a safe and effective way to keep down the odour? Much appreciated.
