Indiana has new legislation that toughens the penalties for animal abuse. This is a good start, but if I read this quote right, it is not an offense to abuse invertebrate animals? Many people now have hissing cockroaches, tarantulas, black widow spiders, sand crabs and other assorted invertebrates as pets.
Public Law 132, formerly HB 1223, subjects "a person who knowingly or intentionally tortures, beats or mutilates a vertebrate animal" to being charged with a Class D felony punishable by a prison sentence of at least one year and a fine.
Anyone know if there is any legislation that protects invertebrates? Maybe there should be legislation to cover ones that are regarded as pets. I guess I don't mind if my animals are flea-free, if carpenter ants go elsewhere, if silverfish stay out of my shower, if dust mites are kept to a bare minimum in my house, etc., but for pets...well, it just seems different.
