SAMPLE LETTER:
Re: Animal Cruelty Case Against Deborah Ehlman
The Honorable Thomas Griffin:
The following letter accurately expresses my views regarding this issue.
I write to respectfully request that you seek the maximum penalty against Deborah Ehlman of Norwich, who has been charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly allowing her dog, Saratoga, to die from starvation and exposure.
According to a December 19, 2002 Norwich Bulletin news report, state marshal Margaret M. LaBranche discovered the body of the 9 year old deceased dog. She reported that the dog looked emaciated, was in poor condition and was starting to smell. Dr. Kathryn Hulin of the All Friends Animal Hospital in Norwich examined the dog and reported that the cause of death was starvation, dehydration and severe exposure to the cold. Dr. Hulin also said the dog had not been cared for in a very
long time and it was the worst case of animal cruelty she had witnessed in nine years. She said the lack of enamel on the teeth, jaundice in the eyes, gums and mouth indicated a damaged liver due to a lack of food. The eyes of the dog were sunken in the eye socket, indicating a long process of starvation and lack of water. The ear tips and feet and other area of exposed skin indicated long exposure to the outdoors. There was no muscle or fat on the dog and all its ribs were showing, indicating a long period without access to food, she said.
Ms. Ehlman has no excuse for such blatant disregard for the life and welfare of this defenseless animal. If she was unable to care for Saratoga, she could have brought the dog to a humane society, providing a chance for adoption, or at least a chance to be killed in a humane manner. Instead, she chose to allow this dog to suffer what undoubtedly was an agonizing death.
If she is found guilty, I ask that the maximum penalty be sought against Ms. Ehlman, including the maximum jail sentence. In addition, I request that she receive mandatory psychological counseling, have any other animals removed from her possession, and be prohibited from ever owning or harboring animals in the future.
Please send a strong message to the community that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated by a civilized society by prosecuting this case to the fullest extent of the law.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
Sincerely,
