National Geographic & Dog Thrown into Traffic

I received an email that the National Geographic Explorer channel hired Lisa Ling as the new host for their broadcast. This mail stated that Ling publicly declared bewilderment over the severity of the sentence handed down to the man in Santa Clara California, who killed Leo the dog by throwing him into oncoming traffic. Allegedly, her remark with regards to the verdict was, "It Was Just a Dog".

I would like to know if anyone knows this to be true. If Ling did express such a sentiment, I would think it inconsistent with the values of National Geographic, and therefor render Ling an unsuitable host.

Any feedback is appreciate.
